“The first wave of infections has not even ended”, warn experts before reopening

Mexico would have to spend at least 15 consecutive days with a reduction in infections to be able to lift the lockdown, specialists consulted by EL UNIVERSAL agreed.

“By no means have we finished with the first wave, in fact we have not even reached the plateau. According to the daily technical reports, there is no evidence that the number of infections is already decreasing, what we have seen is that the epidemic is on the up and at least two weeks should go by without these increases to speak of a lack of confidence, “said Alejandro Macías, member of the UNAM commission to attend the coronavirus.

Although he believes that it is good for the government to implement a traffic light to know which entities can resume activities and which cannot, the researcher assured that since there is no stable epidemic in the country, it is difficult to draw a projection.

“It seems to me that right now we cannot put an agenda on the virus (…), the pandemic is still not going to make those kinds of plans.”

Regarding the measures that the federal government must promote so that society does not lower its guard before the Covid, Alejandro Macías mentioned that they should focus, above all, on public transport or places that have a high attendance.

He emphasized the need for health authorities to promote laboratory tests, particularly in companies that will return to work, since at the time a case is detected, it is very likely that the virus has been circulating for weeks in that area.

“According to the map presented by the government, 30 states have active transmission, an opening is not feasible without thinking of increasing the number of tests, at least in work centers,” he assured.

On the tours of the President in different states, the researcher said that not even the municipalities called “De la Esperanza” are viable for him to visit. “There is no hope that the President will start his tours again … it is not necessary, he should set the example and wait a little longer.”
