The first trial in the Kosovo War Crimes Tribunal begins

The first trial in the Kosovo War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague began on Wednesday, in which former high-ranking commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Salih Mustafa, was on trial.

Prosecutors have also indicted others, including former Kosovo President Hashim Tachi, who resigned as president last yearto defend himself against charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. More than 13,000 people were killed in the Kosovo war, mostly Albanians.

The Kosovo War Crimes Tribunal was established in 2015 following pressure from the United States and Europe on the Kosovo government to try war crimes committed by Kosovo Liberation Army militants against ethnic Serbs.

Salih Mustafa, high commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army was detained in Kosovo last year and transferred to the Netherlands. He was charged with war crimes, arbitrary detention, cruel treatment, torture of at least six people and the murder of one person in a detention camp in Kosovo in April 1999.
