The First Time, Biden’s Government Sanctions Iran

WASHINGTON – Ministry of Foreign Affairs United States of America (US) blacklisted two Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) interrogators for human rights violations during the 2019 and 2020 protests. These sanctions were imposed amid a standoff between Washington and Tehran over reviving the 2015 nuclear deal .

This is the first step the US government under President Joe Biden to impose sanctions on Iran . US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announces witnesses to the interrogator IRGC Ali Hemmatian and Masoud Safdari.

“(Sanctions are given) complicity in gross human rights violations, namely torture and / or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment and those detained during protests in 2019 and 2020 in Iran,” said Blinken. as quoted from Al Arabiya, Wednesday (10/3/2021).

Both Iranian officials and their immediate family members are now barred from entering the United States.

“We will continue to consider all appropriate tools to impose retribution on those responsible for atrocities and human rights violations in Iran,” Blinken was quoted as saying. Reuters.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said America could pursue its interest in prohibiting Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons while also explaining that there would be consequences for human rights abuses.

The Biden administration has said it is ready to talk with Iran to continue compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal. However, the two sides have collided with the question of who should take the first step.

Iran says the United States should lift sanctions, while Washington says Tehran must first return to complying with the accord, which it has progressively violated since 2019.
