The first test gas for the LNG terminal near Alexandroupolis has been delivered

The first test batch of liquefied natural gas has arrived at the new floating terminal for the regasification of the blue fuel at the port of Alexandroupolis in northern Greece, the Greek portal energypress.gr wrote, quoted by BTA on Tuesday. This happened on January 20 and the quantities will check how all the facility’s systems are working, including the gas pipeline connecting it to the Greek grid, 24 km of which is underwater.

The launch of the terminal into commercial operation is expected around March 1, 2024. Its capacity is 5.5 billion cubic meters per year, of which 1 billion cubic meters has been reserved by the Bulgarian state gas supplier Bulgargaz.

A total of 13 companies have supply contracts within 80 percent of the terminal’s capacity, and there is increased interest from other companies for the remaining capacity, the publication states.

The construction of the liquefied natural gas terminal in Alexandroupolis started on May 3, 2022. The investment in it is about 370 million euros.

The Bulgarian “Bulgartransgaz” has a share of 20 percent in the project company “Gaztrade”, which will be the operator of the terminal. The Greek Kopelousou family, which is the initiator of the project, the Greek state gas companies DEPA and DESFA and the Cypriot tanker operator GasLog Cyprus Investments Ltd have the same amount.

The terminal in Alexandroupolis is connected to the already functioning gas pipeline from Komotini to Sofia, which is connected to the Trans-Adriatic Gas Pipeline (TAP) and the Greek national gas transmission system.

An LNG terminal also operates in Revitoussa near Athens, where a floating storage facility was recently put into operation, increasing its capacity by about 65 percent.
