The first soldiers of the German brigade will arrive in Lithuania in September
Vilnius, July 28, LETA–BNS. The first soldiers from the German brigade being formed in Lithuania will be deployed in September, the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Valdemars Rupšis announced, adding that it is still being decided whether they will be deployed in Rukla, Jonava district, or closer to Vilnius.
First, soldiers of the German brigade will arrive in Lithuania, responsible for preparing for the deployment of other units and assessing other conditions.
Rupšis told journalists in Klaipeda on Thursday that the decision on whether to deploy German soldiers in Rukla or closer to Vilnius should be made within a month.
“The fact is that part [par sagatavošanu atbildīgo] the soldiers will be here until September, but we still have to wait until the final destination, as high-level military meetings continue,” he added.
The German brigade in Lithuania will be deployed in accordance with what was decided at the NATO summit in Madrid at the end of June.
NATO also confirmed its intention, if necessary, to strengthen the multinational combat battalions deployed in the countries of the eastern flank of the alliance since 2017 to the level of a brigade.
Lithuanian officials estimate that the infrastructure necessary for the full deployment of the German brigade will be completed by 2025.
