From the final in Melbourne on January 27 until Sunday, she defeated five tennis players in five tournaments. On the way to the third round in Madrid, she easily eliminated Magda Linette, needing three sets. Ultimately, she had her way and made it to the third round at the expense of the Pole.
On Sunday, Aryna Sabalenka’s opponent was Robin Montgomery. The next hope of American tennis is still a teenager, ranked 183rd in the WTA rankings. In Madrid, the US representative eliminated Elina Awanesjan and Katie Boulter, who are better known in world tennis. She played five sets in these matches and in the third round she had the opportunity to play the first match in her career against Aryna Sabalenka. The beginnings were difficult, but Robin Montgomery quickly steadied herself in this match.
The match started with two games, which Aryna Sabalenka decided in an advantage play. She thus gained momentum and jumped up more vigorously towards the end of the first set. Sabalenka needed four set points to end the round.

Until the score was 6:6, and until then the American was in more trouble. She defended two break points. The decision was decided by a tie-break, in which Robin Montgomery was the better. At 6-3, she could afford to waste two set balls and then used the one to make it 7-5.
The teenager did not hide her joy after winning the set against the second-ranked WTA player. She was happy for so long that after over an hour she lost her own serve at the beginning of the third set. She was able to react to it and lead to a 2-2 draw from 0-2. There was no time to respond to another break because Aryna Sabalenka made it in the last game of the match to make it 6:4.
The winner will now play in a hit match with Danielle Collins, and the stake will be to advance to the quarterfinals.
