The first practice in Mexico was interrupted by red flags and accidents. Russell set the fastest time

George Russell set the fastest time in the first practice ahead of Carlos Sainz and Júki Cunoda.

Formula 1 moved from Texas to the Mexican capital for the highest round of the calendar.

Five teams fielded young riders in the first practice session. Mercedes Antonelli, Ferrari Bearman, O’Ward‘s McLaren, Aston Martin from Drugovich and Sauber Švarcman.

The practice session was stopped with red flags shortly after it started due to debris before the first corner, which was also run by Antonelli.

The restart occurred 10 minutes after the start of training. Verstappen was being worked on the floor, but after a few minutes the Red Bull driver returned to the line.

Shortly before halfway through practice, Albon and Bearman collided. Red flags were raised along the way again.

Albon was in the fast lap, Bearman was slow. Albon lost control of the car on the pavement and crashed into Bearman. The Williams driver then ended up in the barrier at the 10th turn. Training for both of them ended.

Towards the end of practice, Verstappen complained of a loss of power. Training ended for him a few minutes early.

Russsell set the fastest time ahead of Sainz and Cunoda.

The second practice will start at midnight and will be led by Pirelli, who will test the tires for next year.

21:06: Moving on… the riders are putting on the soft tyres.

20:56: Albon was in the fast lap, Bearman was slow. Albon lost control of the car and crashed into Bearman.

20:53: Albon crashed and Bearman has a damaged car.

20:52: red flags

20:52: So far, everyone is still on solid tires. Sainz took the lead.

20:49: Verstappen back on track.

20:47: The order changes rapidly. Albon is currently at the helm.

20:43: The floor of Verstappen’s car is being worked on. That the clip was from his car?

20:40: Training has resumed.

20:35: There is some debris in the first version…

20:34: red flags!

20:32: All on solid tires for now. Albon, Hulk and Colapinto are still in the pits.

20:30: Training begins…

20:26: Only Lando Norris is supposed to be on a new floor this weekend.

20:25: The air temperature is only 18 °C, but the sun warms the way to 43 °C.

20:19: The teams also brought new parts to Mexico … but mostly related to the circuit, which is at a high altitude, so, among other things, more cooling is needed. News has 5 teams. Most of the attention will be focused on the “heavily” redesigned floor of the McLaren. VCARB also has performance-related news – it’s also about the floor.

20:19: Alonso rides with a special helmet design.

20:17: Fernando Alonso is celebrating his 400th grand prix in Mexico. The team itself presents it as the 400th start, but that awaits Alonso only in Qatar. The Spaniard did not start three races in his career:

  • Belgium 2001: did not take part in the restart of the race (which was considered a new start) due to a technical problem
  • USA 2005: race boycott by Michelin customers
  • Russia 2017: gearbox failure in warm-up lap

20:15: We see five young cyclists in the first training session. Teams must field a driver who has won up to two grand prix in each car at least once. That’s why Ferrari can field Bearman.

The practice of the youth will also affect the second practice, because the racing drivers, which we will not see now, only have to test for Pirelli for 60 minutes and the other 30 minutes can be prepared to qualify and the race .

Who will we see?

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes (Hamilton)
Oliver Bearman, Ferrari (Leclerc)
Pato O’Ward, MacLaren (Norris)
Felipe Drugovich, Aston Martin (Alonso)
Robert Švarcman, Sauber (Chou)

20:13: Tonight will be a long formal night and also a bit unconventional. The first practice session will be normal, but the second, which will be longer, will be dedicated to tire tests and will be managed by Pirelli. We’ll get to the details at the start – but we’ve already covered most of it a recent article.

20:10: Welcome to the online coverage of the first training session in Mexico.
