The first outbreak of African swine fever has been confirmed in Romania

The first outbreak of African swine fever was confirmed in Romania, in pigs from a farm on the outskirts of Satu Mare, the National Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) announced on Tuesday. It said the virus had been introduced into the country through contaminated animal products from Ukraine.

According to ANSVSA, African swine fever has been confirmed by the Institute of Diagnosis and Animal Health, and epidemiological investigations have established that there is a primary outbreak and a secondary outbreak of the disease.

“From the first investigations made on the spot by the team of inspectors of DSVSA Satu Mare, it emerged that the virus was introduced in the country through contaminated animal products from Ukraine, but the epidemiological investigation is ongoing,” says the quoted source.

ANSVSA also says that the Satu Mare Local Disease Control Center together with DSVSA intervened and took several measures: samples were collected for laboratory examinations, restrictions were imposed for the infected areas, seven animals were killed, and the bodies were were incinerated, disinfection was performed in the two households where the sick pigs were detected, checks were made in the households in the area where the disease was detected and a protection and surveillance zone was established around the outbreak.

After receiving confirmation of the outbreak of swine fever, the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority notified the nationally authorized and counterpart structures in the European Union, as well as the World Organization for Animal Health.
