Growing mussels in the North Sea is not that simple, says scientist Bert Groenendaal: “The biggest problem with breeding in the sea is actually the circumstances. You should not forget that the North Sea is one of the roughest seas in the world. because of the limited depth. That means that there are huge currents and that there are many storms. The mussel from the North Sea hangs fairly close to the water surface. It feels those waves and is therefore constantly in motion. That has an effect on that mussel: it’s a nice size, full and delicious.”
Stephanie Debels of Brevisco has the ambition to launch the Flemish Banks mussel on the entire Belgian market.
