Gharbia – Marwa Shaheen:
Today, Tuesday, a commission from the Ministry of Health visited the Mahalla General Hospital to examine the wax baby to study his condition and to check the quality of the medical service provided to him by the treating medical team.
The ministerial committee also reviewed the medical services provided to patients in the various wards of the hospital and their satisfaction with the healthcare provided to them.
Al-Mahalla General Hospital in Gharbia Governorate received a newborn baby covered with a layer of wax, which is scientifically called “collodion baby”.
Specialists said the baby’s condition is rare and is due to a genetic defect that causes the skin to become covered in a layer of wax, which affects the newborn’s vital functions.
Dr. Jamal Abu Shadi, director of Al-Mahalla General Hospital, said that the hospital’s day care received the newborn’s condition yesterday and the necessary medical treatment has been processed and received, adding that medical staff are highly qualified in dealing with these cases.
Abu Shadi pointed out that this disease is immunological and affects the vital functions of the body and causes deterioration of the skin and eyes due to the presence of the layer called “wax layer”, adding that the treatment of the matter depends on medical care for the skin and address the symptoms that appear on the child with intensive and timely medical care.
He added that this is the first case Mahalla General Hospital receives for this type of disease, but it was not the first in Egypt, as other similar cases have occurred.
