The First Mass Murder in the United States: Howard Unruh’s “Death March” in 1949

There have been countless crimes involving firearms in the United States over the past few decades. Mass killings in schools are especially common in the country, when some deranged or hateful sociopath, armed with weapons, ends the lives of innocent people indiscriminately. When did it all start? Murder has been before our eyes since the end of time. People have been shooting each other since firearms were invented. However, mass murders with firearms are a relatively new phenomenon. At least in the US.

Howard Unruh’s “Death March” is considered the first mass murder in the United States involving the use of a firearm. On September 6, 1949, the 28-year-old man walked out of his apartment in Camden and shot 13 people in his path within 12 minutes. He spent the rest of his life in a psychiatric clinic, not for a moment regretting what he had done. He once even stated that he would have killed a thousand people if he hadn’t run out of bullets.
