This is the first map of Norway made by a Norwegian cartographer.

But would it be good enough in the event of a military attack on the country?

An offensive Swedish king looked with hungry eyes at Norway.

Was the border with Sweden safe? And where did it actually go?

It was urgent to get Norway accurately measured and mapped.

The Swedish king began to rattle his saber. Gustav III looked west towards Norway and found an attractive prey. Fear led Norway to start drawing maps.

AFTENPOSTEN HISTORY: Two years after Gustav 3rd took over the throne, what is today the National Map Agency was established exactly 250 years ago.

Much of the reason was that the king in the east wanted more land.

What started with a threat from the neighbor was to have great significance and influence both militarily and civilly.

Officers in training drew some of the first maps in Norway. They did it to be prepared for a possible Swedish attack.
