- The spouse of the president will earn “0.9 times the basic salary of a Supreme Court judge at the basic rate”, i.e. almost PLN 18,000
- Until now, the state did not pay even the first ladies ZUS contributions
- This is another attempt to deal with this topic. In the last presidential campaign, Andrzej Duda’s main competitor, Rafał Trzaskowski, expressed his warmth with similar ideas.
This may cut through the endless discussion of whether spouses of heads of state should be on the state wage or not. Today they are not. The budget does not even cover their social security contributions for the period when they cannot work.
And the day on which they cross the threshold of the Presidential Palace is usually the last day of their professional work in their lives. Just in case Agata Kornhauser-Duda it’s different. The president revealed a few years ago in an interview with “Super Express” that he covers its premiums out of his own pocket.
Once it was one step away from a systemic solution to this issue. In 2016, the PiS draft was submitted to the Sejm, which provided for the president’s spouse to receive 55 percent a month. the president’s salary, i.e. approx. PLN gross.
The project also provided that the former first ladies would get 75 percent. your salary, i.e. approx. 10 thousand PLN gross monthly.
In addition, the spouses of the head of state were to be entered on the list of persons affected by restrictions in running a business (for example, they would have to submit property declarations, similarly to ministers and deputies).
Law and Justice eventually withdrew from this idea. At that time, the prevailing view was expressed by some PiS activists who argued that the public opinion would not accept the increases for politicians.
The topic returned in the recently completed presidential campaign. Rafał Trzaskowski on July 6, during the “Presidential Arena” in Leszno, admitted that if he becomes the president of Poland, his wife should be paid social and health insurance, and the years of work as the first lady should count towards her retirement pension.
Same Małgorzata Trzaskowska declared that she is in favor of paying salaries to the first ladies from the budget.
The current draft of the Sejm’s regulatory commission stipulates that the spouse of the president will earn “0.9 times the basic salary of a Supreme Court judge at the basic rate”.
Translating this into a normal language and the current rates, it will be PLN 17.9 thousand gross. This is exactly the same as the price of the constitutional minister who manages the ministry on a daily basis.
This means that during the 5-year term of office of the head of state, his or her spouse will be able to earn over one million zlotys gross.
In addition, the project underway today significantly increases the salary of the president himself, to whom the state would transfer almost PLN 26,000 a month. Today it is just over 20,000.
Except for the main tenant Presidential Palace the changes in the law would benefit other officials who would earn respectively:
- President: PLN 25 981 gross (currently PLN 12.6 thousand gross)
- first Lady: 18 thousand PLN gross (currently without salary)
- Marshals of the Sejm and Senate: PLN 21 984 gross (currently PLN 14 thousand gross)
- Deputy Marshals of the Sejm and Senate: PLN 17 987 gross (currently PLN 12 thousand gross)
- premier: PLN 21 984 gross (currently PLN 11 thousand gross)
- ministers: PLN 17 987 gross (currently PLN 10.1 thousand gross)
- deputy: PLN 16 988 gross (currently PLN 8 thousand gross)
- provincial governors: 14 989 PLN gross (currently PLN 11-12 thousand gross)
- wicewojewodowie: PLN 12,990 gross (currently PLN 11 thousand gross)
- deputies and senators PLN 12 600 gross (currently PLN 8 thousand gross)
After the bill is passed in the Sejm, it will go to the Senate, which will have one month to introduce any amendments to it.
