Albania’s parliament has removed President Ilir Meta from office for serious violations of the constitution during the April election campaign, Albanian media reported.
105 deputies in the 140-seat parliament voted in favor of Meta’s release, 7 opposed and three abstained, BNR.
The charges against Meta – “serious violations” of the Constitution during the April election campaign. Ilir Meta then accused the Socialists, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama, of preparing to rig the election and seizing all state institutions.
This is the first impeachment of a head of state in the history of Albania. The final word on the removal of the president has the Constitutional Court, which must rule within three months.
