Ten years ! For ten years fans of New York, Special Unit (broadcast on TF1 which does not highlight its unpublished episodes) hoped that Chris Meloni returns to the series created by Dick Wolf and reunites with his playmate Mariska Hargitay who admitted that being on the show had made her a better person. Rest assured, their patience will soon be rewarded. And while the reunion will be sealed during a special double episode broadcast on NBC, the American network which broadcasts the series in the United States, on April 1. But to help us wait a bit longer, the official fictional account on Instagram features the very first images of a long-awaited comeback.
The first images of the long-awaited reunion between Stabler and Benson in New York, Special Unit
For now, the producers of the series are playing with the nerves of the faithful of the series to the 22 seasons, and a little also with their frustration. In these few pictures of New York, Special Unit, they show first how much the departure, a real surprise,Elliot Stabler, had affected Olivia Benson in 2011. Then shows Olivia in the middle of an intervention on the ground who is being stopped by someone calling her “Life“in a voice that no viewer of the first hour (on condition, of course, of watching the series in their original version) could not forget, she turns around and cannot feign her astonishment before murmuring a”Elliot“.
Chris Meloni’s departure from New York, Special Unit had been a surprise
A few weeks just before the shooting of season 13, in spring 2011, Chris Meloni (hero of the new spin-off) had surprised his world by refusing to commit to new seasons of New York, Special Unit, for lack of agreeing with the production. His departure had also been recorded in the very first episodes of the new salvo without even appearing on the screen. If this time he appears alongside Mariska Hargitay, it’s actually because the special episode of New York, Special Unit actually serves as a launching pad for Law & Order, Organized Crime of which he is the star.
Warren Leight, the current showrunner of the series, had revealed on the show Entertainment Tonight, at the time of the reunion: “We did readings through Zoom throughout the season. But this time it was different. In a way, it felt like just before a show premiered on Broadway: lots of anticipation, excitement, even nervousness. We had a huge number of people from the channel, the studio, the production who joined us to encourage us. The moment Benson and Stabler have their first scene, it felt like the whole puzzle had come together..”
