Britain plans to train up to 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers in total.
The first group includes several hundred new recruits who will be trained in the use of weapons, battlefield first aid and patrolling, the British Ministry of Defense said.
The training of the soldiers is part of a wider aid package for Ukraine, which also includes anti-tank weapons, missile systems and other weapons worth 2.3 billion pounds (2.7 billion euros).
“Using the world-class expertise of the British military, we will help Ukraine rebuild its forces and increase resistance, defending its sovereignty and the right to choose its future,” said British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.
As part of the program, Britain purchased AK-type assault rifles so that the Ukrainians could train with the weapons they would use on the front. Britain will also provide soldiers with helmets, body armor, eye, ear and hip protectors, individual first aid kits, as well as uniforms and boots.
The aim of the program is to quickly turn civilians into effective soldiers, a British sergeant told The Times newspaper.
