The first German professor of ethics in information technology, Judith Simon, will talk about the compatibility of information technology and our moral values as part of the public lecture series of the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS).
The public is invited to a lecture in the series on May 23 at 6:00 p.m Trust the Forum. Afterwards, the audience can discuss questions of ethics and artificial intelligence (AI) with Professor Judith Simon over pretzels and wine.
What is our responsibility when we use today’s information technology? This question of increasing digitization and the use of AI concerns the professor of ethics at the University of Hamburg.
“When we delegate decisions or actions to machines, it must be done in a way that expands, not reduces, the ability of people to act,” said Ms. Simon in a recent interview with NDR. She emphasizes that AI is truly conservative: it learns from old data and follows these patterns in the predictions it generates. “Decisions for the future are then based on this old data,” she said.
Miss Simon deals with the interconnection of ethical, epistemological and political questions in the context of big data, artificial intelligence and digitalisation. As a member of the German Ethics Council and other committees for scientific policy advice, she shapes the debate about moral and ethical questions that affect the use and control of modern information technology.
So do we need a new ethics? Ms Sím emphasizes that the digital only reinforces specific questions – about equality, freedom, justice – but under different conditions. AI is only capable of acting or intelligence to a limited extent. But new actors wanted an ethics that also takes into account the external actions of individuals. The following always applies: “Where does one person’s freedom end, when does it hurt others? Who determines how things work? Who is suffering?”
As part of the FIAS Forum on May 23, Ms. Simon presents his opinion on the ethical opportunities and risks involved in machine learning and will discuss with laymen and scientists where and how control and interventions are necessary and possible. The expert sheds light on ethical, epistemological and political questions in the context of big data, AI and digitalisation. Anyone interested is welcome!
