The first four America’s Cup regattas postponed

Defending champion Team New Zealand and Italian challenge Luna Rossa will have to wait four more days before battling it out to win the America’s Cup. The organizers of the prestigious sailing event announced this Sunday the postponement of the first four regattas, scheduled for March 5 and 6 off Auckland.

After a 13th case of Covid-19 in two weeks, New Zealand’s largest city will be confined for seven days from Sunday morning. America’s Cup organizers hope to launch the competition on March 10, the date that was to host the fifth and sixth regattas (out of 13 possible).

« We need to be aware of all likely scenarios in order to come up with an updated schedule of events that meets all regulatory requirements ”Said Tina Symmans, President of America’s Cup Events. The latter intends to request a derogation to organize the regattas if the confinement was extended beyond a week.
