The Mayor of the Capital, Nicusor Dan, announced on Thursday that an important step has been taken for the project of the 10 radial roads that will connect Bucharest to the future ring highway. It is about the awarding by the Bucharest Metropolitan Area Intercommunity Development Association of the contract for the feasibility study related to the Radial Road 1-Vest Express (DR1), which will directly connect the Domneşti and Ciorogârla localities to the Capital, according to News.ro.

The association Explan SRL (leader) – Geologic Site SRL – DP Consult SRL won the contract with a value of 12,639,864 lei without VAT. The deadline for drawing up the document is 12 months from the signing of the contract, the mayor announced.

According to Nicusor Dan, Radial Road 1-West Express it will be approximately 9 km long and will connect Timisoara Boulevard with the Capital belt and the future A0 Motorway.

“It will have the characteristics of a highway or an expressway, with 4 traffic lanes, 2 in each direction, bike lanes and sidewalks. After the feasibility study, it will be determined which of the 3 variants of street alignment is the right one, with a width of 21 m, 28 m or 32 m”, says the mayor.

He also announces that for 3 other radial roads, the stage of submitting offers in the tender procedures has ended and they are currently in different evaluation stages, as follows:

  • Radial Road 4 (DR 4 – Nord Expres) – it will be approximately 11.5 km long and will connect the town Corbeanca and the Municipality of Bucharest – the stage of evaluation of technical offers.
  • Radial Road 9 (DR 9 South Express) – it will be approximately 13 km long and will connect the town Otter and the Municipality of Bucharest – the stage of evaluation of technical offers.
  • Radial Road 10 – Măgurele Expres (DR 10) – will be approximately 11 km long and will connect the Municipality of Bucharest and the city Magurele – the evaluation stage of DUAE documents (Single European Acquisition Document).

Regarding the other radial roads, work is being done on the favorability analyses, according to the general mayor. They will connect the Capital and the surrounding localities, as follows:

  • DR3 – Giuleşti Expres – will have a length of approximately 10 km and will make the common connection SabareniGiurgiu County, by the Municipality of Bucharest.
  • DR5 – Pipera Expres – will be approximately 10.5 km long and will connect the City of Bucharest and the localities Otopeni – Gunners – Volunteers.
  • DR6 – Afumaţi Expres – will be approximately 4.4 km long, will connect the A0 Highway with DN2 and will be a bypass option for the town smoked.
  • DR7 – Est Expres – will have a length of approximately 6 km and will connect the Municipality of Bucharest and the locality Royal Mill.
  • DR8 -Splai Expres – will be approximately 5.5 km long and will connect the City of Bucharest and the metropolitan area through the node Blackbird.
  • Radial Road 2 – DR2 – The A1 highway, which will be approximately 12 km long and involves the expansion of the A1 highway to three lanes in each direction between km 10 and km 23 of the A1 highway, will be carried out by CNAIR

The financing for carrying out the feasibility studies is to be provided through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program (POIM).

Context. The ten radial roads will have a length of over 96 km and 33 road junctions, crossing 30 localities in the metropolitan area.

The initial project announced in 2021 by the Ministry of Transport also provided for 96 km of sidewalks and cycle paths along all radial roads and 120 charging points for electric vehicles.

The project of the 10 radials will allow the use of the ring road and the ring highway not only as alternatives to transit traffic, but also as alternatives to the current traffic of the residents of the Capital and Ilfov county.
