Italy this Friday recorded the first death by Covid-19. This is a 78-year-old man who had been referred to as being one of two cases of infection with the new coronavirus in Padua, in the Veneto region, in the north of the country.
La Repubblica.
The man, an Italian citizen, who was already hospitalized due to other health problems, died Friday night at the Hospital of Schiavonia in Padua. “There was no time to transfer him,” said Luca Zaia, governor of the Veneto region. It is the first European to not resist infection caused by the new coronavirus, detected in December last year in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
After confirming the first coronavirus death in the country, the local authorities met in an emergency and decided to adopt preventive measures. One is the closure of Schiavonia Hospital. “No one will be able to enter, nor will hospitalized patients be discharged” without first undergoing tests.
This Friday, authorities in northern Italy ordered the closure of schools, bars and other public spaces in 10 locations after a succession of new cases of people infected with coronavirus. The authorities recorded 17 cases of infection with the new coronavirus – 15 in Lombardy and two in the Veneto region, says La Repubblica. There are about 250 quarantined people in the country.
Five doctors and nine others tested positive in the Lombardy region after going to the same bar and having the same group of friends, with two other confirmed cases in the Veneto region, officials said, quoted by AFP.
“Italy is ready, we have prepared a plan because it was clear that this could happen. Now it is a matter of implementing the prepared plan,” said Health Minister Roberto Speranza when announcing the measures.
More than 50,000 people were invited to stay at home in the areas in question, while all public activities such as carnival parties, church services and sporting events were banned for a week.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the government maintains “a very high level of precaution”.
Local streets are deserted, with few people outside, and public spaces are closed.
