Box office gross of 20 billion won… The first half of the first half of the first half of the box office of Chinese films
Local media such as Stock Times reported on the 16th that James Cameron’s blockbuster film “Avatar: Water Road” (Avatar 2) performed poorly at the box office on its first day of release in China due to the spread of Corona 19.
According to Maoyan, an online ticketing platform, Avatar 2 earned 110 million yuan (about 20.6 billion won) in box office revenue across China as of 7:00 pm on the first day of its release.
Avatar 2’s revenue on this day accounted for 98% of all film showings in China, ranking first, but local media judged that it fell short of expectations.
The patriotic film “Changjin Lake” (205.2 million yuan), which was released in September last year and caused a sensation at the box office, and its sequel “Changjin Lake Watergate” (6411.2 billion yuan), released in February this year, are far below the opening day earnings. Of course, in the first half of this year, the first day opening income of Chinese films was only about half of the 200 million yuan (37.5 billion won).
The Securities Times said, “A box office explosion was expected due to high interest ahead of release, but ticket sales were low in most regions due to the influence of Corona 19.”
Local media noted that it would not be easy to continue Avatar 1’s box office performance considering the reality that it is difficult to expect Corona 19 to calm down immediately, saying, “Avatar 2’s success in China depends on the situation of Corona 19.”
Unlike the time of release of the previous work, there is also an analysis that the reality of the sharp conflict between the United States and China can affect the box office of Avatar 2.
Avatar 1, which was released in mainland China in 2010, grossed 1.339 billion yuan at the box office, and also earned more than 160 million yuan when it was re-screened in March last year, totaling more than 1.5 billion yuan (about 283.5 billion won). It scored well at the box office.
Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province, which boasts a superb view of strangely shaped rocks that became the backdrop of the floating island in the movie “Hallelujah”, has been called “Avatar” and has become a world-class tourist attraction.
