Brazil registered in the state of Saint Paul the first patient infected in Latin America with the Ómicron XE variant of the coronavirusdetected for the first time last January in the United Kingdom, the Ministry of Health reported today.

The 39-year-old patient “remains under monitoring of the state and municipal health surveillance of São Paulo”reported today the São Paulo Health Secretariat, according to the ANSA news agency.

The man has his complete vaccination schedule, presented mild symptoms and is the first case of the Omicron XE variant in Latin America and the fourth in the American continent.

The diagnosis was confirmed after genetic analysis of a sample taken on March 7 in São Paulo, and the result was notified to the national Ministry of Health.

“The importance of maintaining the complete vaccination schedule is reinforced to prevent the advancement of new variants”reported the Ministry of Health.

The Ómicron XE type is a hybrid of the BA.1 and BA.2 strains and was first identified on January 19 in the United Kingdom, after which more than 700 cases emerged worldwide, three of which in North America, according to the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, quoted by ANSA.
