The first cars will pass the bypass on Tuesday, work hastened by the covid crisis

The first section of the bypass between Slaný and Žižice was put into operation by the Directorate of Roads and Motorways of the Czech Republic (ŘSD) last December. “The second part of the completed road relocation will relieve Žižice, Luníkov and Ješín, which lie on the route of the old road,” said Radek Mátl, General Director of ŘSD.

The bypass was completed a few weeks earlier than expected. The original date was November, but paradoxically the covid of the crisis helped to speed up work, as they could employ workers in the field who had not found employment elsewhere in the spring.

The construction of the first and second stages of the Slaný bypass cost almost 750 million crowns without VAT, a large part of the investment was covered by European subsidies. Approximately 13 kilometers of new roads and several bridges and intersections were created, and adjacent roads were modified.

Slaný, Velvary and other municipalities on the route were significantly relieved of freight traffic by relocating the road. Tens of thousands of cars drove through here every day. Especially in Slaný, congestion caused a traffic collapse in the morning and afternoon rush hours.

Preparatory work on the bypass began in December 2017, and archaeological research continued until May 2019, covering one third of the construction. Thanks to the discoveries, the Slánsko Museum of National History will open an extensive unique exhibition called Thirteen Kilometers of Discovery on October 21, which consists of finds, such as graves and dwellings of people who lived in the area in various times of prehistory and the Middle Ages. The exhibition will be in Slaný all year round and will subsequently be lent to other cities.

Road I / 16 runs on the route Řevničov – Slaný – Mělník – Mladá Boleslav – Jičín – Trutnov – Královec – Poland. It is an important link between the D6, D7, D8, D10 motorways and in the future also the D35. Its length is 191 kilometers.
