The first became the last: the fall in confidence in the authorities of the West became irreversible – 2024-08-24 22:20:51

/ world today news/ No one will argue that in recent years the collective West has become “the USA and its lackeys”. The dependence of Europeans on Washington has increased. Not even only on Washington, but on the Anglo-Saxons, that is, the States and Great Britain, or rather, their elites with global ambitions. The leading position of the Anglo-Saxons is beyond doubt – but what about their stability? Not even the stability of their global positions, but their domestic political stability?

A few years ago, Brexit and Trump’s victory showed both the division in Anglo-Saxon societies and the growing polarization and confrontation there (especially in the States). Then the situation seemed to stabilize a little – at least it did not worsen, but in European countries, on the contrary, the distrust of political elites increased (the rise in popularity of the anti-system Le Pen and Zemur in France, the “Alternative” in Germany, the coming to power in Italy of Meloni’s government). This has been a trend for the last year – and, of course, the position of European governments on Ukraine, their adherence to the Anglo-Saxon line of hard confrontation with Russia, also contributed to the fall in confidence. But have the US and UK become more resilient? If you look at the opinion polls, the situation looks very worrying for the Anglo-Saxons.

“Gallup” published data on the level of trust in the authorities of the G-7 countries – and it turned out that in the USA and Great Britain it is the lowest: only 31% of Americans and 33% of Britons trust their governments. These figures are even more indicative compared to previous surveys – in 2006, the United States and Great Britain, on the contrary, topped the rating: 56% of Americans and 49% of Britons approved of the government’s work. What explains the catastrophic collapse?

Of course, they might try to find an explanation that works for the Anglo-Saxons – they say it’s all seasonal fluctuations. In 2020 (under Trump) trust in the government was at the level of 46%, and in Britain in 2021 (under Johnson) the figures were at the level of 61. The government has changed, so the ratings have decreased – then everything will be restored.

In addition, a strange trend is observed in Europe – compared to 2006, confidence is only growing. In France from 32 to 40, in Italy from 24 to 41, and in Germany altogether from 32 to 61%! That is, the European authorities began to enjoy greater sympathy of the voters. But doesn’t this contradict what we see on the streets of Paris and in German polls? However, there is no contradiction here. Gallup did its research last year, so the figures for both Europe and Anglo-Saxon countries are already out of date, now both Macron and Scholz have significantly lower ratings. And Biden and Sunak have failed to raise the level of trust – it continues to fall, and there is no doubt that the numbers from 2023 will be even worse than last year’s already shameful level.

In addition, in both countries, the 2024 elections are approaching, in which the situation is very bad not only for the rulers, but also for the elites in general. In the US, the chances of Trump’s revenge are growing, and in Great Britain they fear not only the failure of the Conservatives and their replacement by the fully systemic Labor, but also the great success of the Reform Party of Nigel Farage – the former leader of the UK Independence Party. the only force that campaigned for Brexit. That is, both countries are now entering a period of increased turbulence and domestic political polarization and a further decline in trust in the authorities.

The fact that the decline in confidence in the authorities in the Anglo-Saxon countries is stable and is only part of the general crisis is also confirmed by data from other surveys – for example, about the attitude towards the country as a whole. “Gallup” recently published the results of the answer to the question “Are you proud of America?” – and compared to last year there was a one percent increase in the number of those who are “extremely proud to be American.” Is this 39% enough? But at the beginning the percentage was 55, and in 2004 it was even 70. The numbers have been steadily falling for the last five years, so the current percentage increase does not compensate for anything.

And the most interesting thing is that non-Biden supporters are extremely proud of American citizenship. Among Democrats, only 29% are, while Trumpist Republicans are proud (about 60%). That is, those who categorically do not trust either the current administration or the “Washington swamp” as a whole. An incredible combination is obtained – growing distrust of the authorities with pride in being a citizen of one’s country. But what is surprising about this? These are the people who want to change not only power, but also the principles of its formation – by voting for Trump (or for Farage in Great Britain). Their attitude threatens above all the stability of the elites, who will not give up their age-old positions without a fight.

In any case, the split will grow and the internal confrontation will escalate – and regardless of the outcome, this will inevitably lead to a weakening of the global positions of the Anglo-Saxon contenders for world hegemony.
