The first blood bank for animals was inaugurated in Corrientes, which operates in the veterinary hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of the UNNE.
With this initiative, another step is taken in animal health, since transfusions can contribute significantly to the health status of pets. It will give those who have a sick animal or one that has suffered an accident the peace of mind of having the vital fluid at the time of the intervention, while people who bring their dogs and cats to donate – who will do so to help others, altruistically – they will get a complete health checkup for their pets.
“The intention of this Blood Bank is for the donor, with the owner, to go to the faculty, where a form will be completed, where they authorize it to be donated,” said Fabiana Cipolini, dean of that Faculty.
«Through this authorization the animals will be identified and samples will be taken. It will go to the clinical analysis laboratory of the Teaching Hospital, where all controls will be established from a health point of view to ensure that the blood we obtain is safe, from an animal that does not suffer from diseases. In this way, having it as a resource, that sachet is prepared to be able to donate to a patient. This is going to be the procedure,” he explained.
