ROMA — Business&Finance, the economic supplement that accompanies Repubblica on Mondayscelebrates its fortieth birthday on March 4 at Bocconi University.
The founder was Eugenio Scalfari to create the insert which since 1984 – the eighth year of Repubblica’s existence – has consistently published insights, analyses, investigations and comments on Italian and international economic current affairs every week.
Alongside Scalfari – he will remain there for many years – there was Giuseppe Turani, noble father of Italian economic commentators.
Together they wrote a book in 1974, “Master race”which began to “shave the powerful” as Gianni Rodari said.

Known to everyone
«Before, only professors discussed economicsnow we bring to everyone’s attention, trying to explain them fully, complex and often arcane events”, Scalfari loved to repeat, speaking with passion and true love of his “second creature”.
To then conclude with the inevitable: «We want it to be more and more a Republic An indispensable tool for intelligent people».
And among the first commentators of A&F we find people linked to the founder by authentic esteem and friendship, as well as equally prestigious protagonists of the economy of their time, from Guido Carli to Giorgio Ruffolo, from Fabiano Fabiani to Marcello De Cecco.

The 40 covers
Next Monday they will be on display in the foyer of the Aula Magna at Bocconi the forty most significant coversone for each year, each accompanied by a text that contextualises the titles, explains their genesis and helps to interpret the economic fact of the moment.
At the same time, throughout the day they will take turns on stage, conducting Giulia Santerinisome of the leading protagonists of the current debate: European Commissioner Paolo Gentilonithe Nobel Prize winner for economics Michael Spence, the minister Adolfo Urso and the undersecretary Federico Freni, the former prime minister and “landlord” Mario Monti and his successor as president of the university Andrea Sironi, the director of the Economics department of Bocconi (and signature of Repubblica) Tito Boeri, and then a long series of CEOs of important companies.
Linked to Europe
The event is entitled “Italy and Europe of tomorrow”. It is not a title chosen at random: our country, shedding its foliageand populist-sovereignist impulses that currently animate the ruling class or at least part of itis increasingly inextricably linked to Europe, in the certainty that virtuous growth and, indeed, tomorrow’s development will only come from ever greater integration.
Just focus on the different covers that between 2009 and 2012 (the year of the fateful “Whatever it takes” di Mario Draghi) were dedicated to the euro crisis, to understand how we were one step away from the abyss, escaped thanks to will, competence but above all European solidarity.
If we were left alone, and here we need to refer to the most recent covers, we could never have faced crises like those that have overwhelmed us in recent years, from the pandemic to wars.
During Monday’s event among other things, seven interviews with as many colleagues who were the coordinators in the A&F editorial team will be screened: Maurizio Ricci, Alessandra Carini, Carlo Clericetti, Marco Panara, Massimo Giannini, Fabio Bogo, up to the current editor-in-chief Roberto Rho.
The power of Cuccia
Everyone tells “his” part of the story: how the editorial team discussed – and therefore decided how to deal with it on the pages of A&F – the extraordinary power of Enrico Cuccia (the patron of Mediobanca in the 1980s).
And then the years of Gianni Agnelli and Cesare Romiti’s Fiat, the bitter parable of controversial captains of industry like Raul Gardini and Gabriele Cagliarithe dawn of the north-east with its “pocket multinationals”, the privatizations and decline of state shareholdings, the speculative attacks on the lira, the birth of the euro, the collapse of the Wall and the implosion of the USSR.
And so on up to the present day, those of the fundamental importance of the Internet and now of its noblest child, artificial intelligenceof the drama of the pandemic but also of the courage and stubbornness with which the economic and social fabric of the country was able to react.
To close on the multiple tragedy of wars first in Ukraine, then in the Middle East and now also in the Red Seawith all the human and economic consequences such as inflation and widespread uncertainty.
