the fire resumes its course, Darmanin announces additional means

Almost six days after the start of the fires in Gironde, the two gigantic forest fires have ravaged nearly 11,000 hectares of vegetation and are still not fixed. New evacuations were in progress Sunday evening in Gironde in front of the advance of the fire which resumed its mad race, making the work of the firefighters “extremely difficult”.

The total area gone up in smoke is “equivalent to the area of Paris”, according to the engineer specializing in computer data processing, Guillaume Rozier.

Faced with the situation, Gérald Darmanin announced this Sunday evening the strengthening of firefighting resources. “As of this evening, 3 additional planes (9 in total), 200 firefighters (1,700 in total) and 11 heavy trucks will be deployed”, wrote the Minister of the Interior in a press release.

On the Landiras and Guillos front, south-east of the Gironde

In the Landiras sector, the “authorities are evacuating the inhabitants of the town of Cabanac (i.e.) 2,100 people”, writes the prefecture on Twitter.

According to the firefighters, these new preventive evacuations bring to “16,200” the number and vacationers who have had to pack their bags urgently since Tuesday.

On the Teste-de-Buch front

At Teste-de-Buch, “the situation is deteriorating. The fire has arrived at the sea and is heading south”, continues in a second tweet the prefecture, which calls for being “extremely careful”.

On social networks, Internet users have published photos and videos, taken from the sea, of this huge fire “30 meters high” devouring the beach of the Lagoon, south of the Dune du Pilat.

“Big resources are being deployed in the sector. However, the fire should not reach the Landes department because the wind should turn towards the west and the north”, indicates Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Mendousse.

The next few hours promise to be “the most difficult” that the firefighters will have to face since the start of the fires.

“The fire is very, very virulent. The weather conditions are extreme: the temperature, the wind, the humidity: all the parameters are the worst possible”, underlines the spokesperson for the “pessimistic” firefighters. Nearly 3,400 hectares went up in smoke at La Teste-de-Buch.

New strategy

A new strategy with the lighting of “tactical fires” and the “creation of firewalls” (clear cuts) has been put in place thanks to the use of bulldozers and the joint work of Sdis with the National Forestry Office , the Gironde federation for the defense of forests against fires (DFCI) and forestry work companies.

“We are working on the flanks to fix them. It is vigilance at all times, day and night, there is no stopping, ”insisted the communication officer of Sdis 33, Laurent Dellac.

Update on the means committed

In total, 1,200 firefighters are mobilized on all fronts.

Since Tuesday, “4 firefighters were slightly injured, a truck overturned and another burned”, according to a latest report.

Five bomber planes (3 Canadair and two Dash planes) perform non-stop rotations. In this regard, a union of civil aviation pilots, in the fight against forest fires in Gironde, asked on Sunday for more planes and available personnel while Civil Security recognized for its part a “tense” situation. but underlined the future increase in material and human resources.

Similarly, many firefighters from all over France arrived on Sunday as reinforcements, particularly in the barracks of the Gironde metropolis, to allow firefighters trained in forest fires to join the rest of the troops on site.
