The startling photos of the massive fire on the sea surface were taken on Saturday night Norwegian time.
The state-owned Mexican oil company Pemex claims the incident was due to a leak from a subsea gas pipeline that goes out to the company’s oil platform Ku Maloob Zaap, according to Reuters.

The fire broke out about 150 meters from the platform, which is one of the company’s largest and most important platforms, located in the south of the Gulf of Mexico.
Orange flames popped up for hours from the sea surface and resembled liquid lava, writes The Guardian.

The circular shape of the fire also meant that it was immediately referred to as “eye of fire”, in Norwegian “eye of fire” on social media, as videos from the extinguishing work went viral.
The fire broke out around 5.15 pm local time, and was not completely extinguished until more than five hours later, at 11.30 pm. No one was injured in the incident.

Pemex says they will now investigate what triggered the leak, and the gas pipeline is currently closed.
“The incident was immediately dealt with when security systems were activated, along with nearby fireboats such as Santa Cruz Island, Campeche Bay, and Bourbon Alienor,” the company said in a statement. Sky News.
A source told Reuters that Pemex also used nitrogen to keep the fire under control.
Angel Carrizales, head of the Mexican company ASEA, which regulates the oil industry in the country, did not lead the leak to oil spills. However, he gave no explanation as to what was burning on the sea surface, writes The Guardian.
