The fire in La Estrella (Toledo) has already reached 2,500 hectares and remains at level two

The forest fire that broke out on Tuesday in the Toledo municipality of La Estrella has already consumed 2,500 hectares and the operational situation remains at level 2 due to the possibility that it may affect non-forestry assets and essential infrastructure during the night of this Wednesday. According to the emergency units, it is suspected that the fire was caused by a traffic accident in an area full of vegetation.

The towns of La Estrella, Aldea nueva de Barbarroya and La Nava de Ricomalillo, as well as the hamlet of Fuentes, have had to be confined due to the risk of smoke damage.

But in the middle of the afternoon, the Castilla-La Mancha Forest Fire Prevention and Extinction Service (Infocam) reported the end of restrictions in the towns of La Estrella, La Nava de Ricomalillo and Fuentes, although they are still maintained as a precautionary measure in Aldea Nueva de Barbarroya.

Earlier, the Deputy Minister for the Environment, José Almodóvar, had announced that the lockdown will continue “until we see how the flames develop in the central hours of the day.” In addition, firefighters recommend that residents avoid leaving their homes.

Without fronts advancing

During Tuesday night, emergency personnel managed to enclose 60 percent of the fire and “there are no active flame fronts advancing,” said the technical director of the emergency, Juan Pedro García.

Although the flames are being contained and the fire is “evolving favourably”, the doctors continue to monitor the situation because “any reactivation would have the same potential as the fire had yesterday”, García assured.

Since early morning, a total of 134 people spread across 20 teams have been working to put out the fire. The Castilla-La Mancha Forest Fire Prevention and Extinction Service (Infocam) has also requested reinforcements from the Military Emergency Unit to extinguish the fire.
