A fire at an Istanbul nightclub during renovations on Tuesday left 29 people dead and others seriously injured, officials and reports said. Several people have been detained for questioning.

At least eight people were injured, seven of them hospitalized in serious condition, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The nightclub, which was closed for renovations, was on the ground floor of a 16-story residential building in the Besiktas district on the European side of the city crossed by the Bosphorus. The fire was put out.

Governor Davut Gul told reporters at the scene that the cause of the fire was under investigation and that the victims were believed to be involved in renovation work.

After receiving notification of the incident, the Turkish authorities have deployed up to 31 fire vehicles and a team of almost 90 people to the area. Police officers and health personnel are also present at the scene.

Authorities detained five people for questioning, including club officials and a person responsible for renovations, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said. “The investigation continues in all its aspects and in a meticulous manner.”

The Minister of the Interior, Ali Yerlikaya, has launched a publication on his social networks where he has expressed his regret for what happened and has confirmed that the authorities have launched an investigation to determine the origin of the flames.

Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu said authorities were inspecting the entire building to assess its safety.

Several fire and medical teams were sent to the scene, he said.
