The fire brigade swims away at 8 degrees in the Rhine – SWR Aktuell

More than 200 fearless jumped into the Rhine on New Year’s Eve in Mainz. The traditional “swimming down” of the fire brigade took place for the 50th time.

While many onlookers were able to enjoy the spectacle at a mild 14 degrees from the banks of the Rhine, 220 swimmers jumped into the 8 degrees cold Rhine. “More than ever,” said the city. Mayor Günter Beck (Greens) gave the go-ahead at 10 a.m. from a fire brigade lifeboat.

The participants came from the entire Rhine-Main area. They swam a good two kilometers from the Fischtorplatz to the Feldbergtor – some of them creatively disguised or equipped with swimming gear.

Proceeds go to children with cancer

The swim shows a special task of the fire brigade – the water rescue. According to the organizers, the campaign should also point out “that the fire brigade, together with the police, rescue services and aid organizations are there for the citizens 24 hours a day, 365 days a year”.

The proceeds from the accompanying fundraiser will be donated to a good cause: this year the money will go to a charity for children with cancer.
