It is a national directive. Since January 1, the bodies responsible for measuring air quality, including ATMO Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes must take into account new smaller particles PM 2.5. Particles equal to or less than 2.5 micrometers. Until then only PM 10 had been measured.
Particles dangerous to health
In general, researchers have demonstrated the harmfulness of particles for health. But the finer they are, the more they penetrate deeply into the body and in particular into the respiratory system. Hence the State’s decision to measure this pollutant to refine the calculation of the daily air quality index.
The consequence is that this daily index is likely to deteriorate not because the air is more polluted but simply because pollution is better taken into account in its calculation. As with other particles, PM 2.5 comes from open-hearth wood heaters or vehicle exhaust gases.
Air to go
In recent years, in the main agglomerations of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, ATMO has been providing you with air quality street by street. This is the case for Valence and Privas. L’application Air to go also lets you propose your journey on foot or by bike avoiding the most polluted axes. It may take a little longer, but it is better for your lungs.
