Since 1992, the United States has “granted Armenia $3 billion for social development and democracy building”, announced the American ambassador in Yerevan, Lynne Tracy, in her intervention, on May 20, at the Armenian Forum of the democracy, gathering the Western diplomatic corps in Armenia, reports the Russian site Eurasia Daily.
The United States has chosen a good partner
“What we do [en Arménie]would have been impossible without the interaction [avec la population], without the will of the people, without all those people who wanted to enjoy the fruits of this support. The United States has chosen a good partner – the Armenian government,” welcomed the diplomat, who heads the second largest American embassy in the world (a territory of 9 hectares, staff of more than 2,000 people, for 2.5 million inhabitants), after that of Iraq.
She then highlighted the role played by “l’American University of Armenia [créée en 1991] and various educational programs supported by the United States”pour “help Yerevan build democratic institutions, fight corruption, develop economy, invest in human capital”in short, everything that represents “a contribution whose results will be visible for a long time”.
The Armenian opposition, which has been demonstrating daily in the streets since April 17 against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s government, called Tracy’s statements a “pharisees” et “serving US geopolitical interests”, continues Eurasia Daily.
“Tracy get out! ”, “Armenia without Nikol!”
The Armenian site Aysor reports that opponents of Pashinian, considered by part of the population as a “pro-Turkish traitor” and therefore pro-American, demonstrated in front of the Marriott Armenia hotel, where the forum was held, to protest against American and European policy in Armenia. They were chanting “Armenia without Nikol, Armenia without Tracy”, “Tracy, get out!”, “Nikol Pashinian has no power in Armenia!”, “Nikol, the traitor!”
But the interested party does not agree. He replied to Lynne Tracy saying that, “according to reports by international organizations, Armenia has gone from being a country dominated by ‘electoral authoritarianism’, to being an ‘electoral democracy’”, relays the Russian-Armenian site Russia Armenia Info. For Pashinyan, Armenia “has gone from the democratic league 1 to the champions league”.
