The final of the Belvedere Opera Singers’ Competition / Day will take place in Dzintari Concert Hall

Guntars Ķirsis, the director of the Dzintari Concert Hall, Mārtiņš Ozoliņš, the chief conductor of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, and Ilmārs Lapiņš, the conductor, will work in the jury of the Baltic selection tour. The first round of the competition in Europe, Canada and the USA has been taking place since February 5, and registration for the competition continues.

Named after Hans Gabor, the prestigious founder of the Vienna Chamber Opera, the competition could be a turning point in the young singers’ careers. In the competition, they can win not only cash prizes, but also cooperation offers. For 40 years, the competition for young vocalists has opened its doors to the world’s most prestigious opera stages. Among the previous participants and laureates are opera stars Elīna Garanča, Angela Georgiu, Marina Meščerjakova, Ildiko Raimondi, Irina Samoilova and Stanislavs Švecs.

On the significant anniversary of the Belvedere competition, from June 4 to 11, the final will take place for the second time in the Dzintari Concert Hall, where the competition was held four years ago with great success.

The competition will feature three main prizes, an audience sympathy prize and an international media jury prize. In the Belvedere competition, young singers have a unique opportunity to discover their talent with world-renowned opera experts. The jury of the finals will include representatives of the opera houses, as well as artistic and singer selection directors, and many agents, representatives of the opera houses and concert halls attend the final every year as guests. That’s why the competition is so important for young talent.

2021 was a challenging year for the organizers of the competition. However, despite the difficult circumstances (a third of the 1246 singers originally registered had to cancel their selection rounds), around 100 young artists from 31 countries went to Erfurt to take part in the final of the Belvedere competition in June 2021. Nine awards were presented, as well as seven cooperation agreements with opera houses or festivals.

Applicants can apply for this year’s competition until April 14 by filling in the registration form for the competition Homepage.
