The teams of Argentina and Paraguay played against each other in the fight for the trophy, but the meeting was marked by a scandal. When the Argentine team was leading 3:1, blood boiled in the Paraguayans, which was also to blame for the mistakes of the referees. The Paraguayan coach was sent to the stands, and his staff left the field after the argument. Spit was flying on the board and the players were often swearing at each other.
The suffocating atmosphere continued in the dressing room, where there was a rift between the players of both teams.
The organizers offered the players the opportunity to play the match again with a new referee, but even that did not convince them. The duel ended and the Argentinians enjoyed the title of world champions.
“They tried everything. We can’t tell them (Paraguayans) to take the cup because it wouldn’t be fair. I am very ashamed and apologize to the audience,” said Silvia Rojasová from the WC organizing team. Paraguayans were outraged.
“It was a clear theft! We decided not to play in the match,” said Paraguay goalkeeper Eduardo Martínez, who pointed to multiple evidence of unfairness in the video.
