The film Titane won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival

The ceremony thus began where it was to end. The unexpected announcement was followed by confusion and shouting from the audience, but the French filmmaker did not go on stage to accept the award. If the winner is confirmed by the official announcement at the end of the evening, Ducournau will only become the second woman to win the prestigious prize.

However, the announcement of other awards did not stop the erroneous statement of the chairman of the jury, which was seen with his head in his hands. The award for best male performance went to Cannes from the American actor Caleb Landry Jones, who played the role of the murderer Martin Bryant in Justin Kurzel’s film Nitram, who murdered 35 people in Tasmania in 1996. The award for best actress went to Norka Renate Reinsve, who starred in the film Verdens verste menneske by Danish filmmaker Joachim Trier.

Last year, the festival was canceled for the first time in history due to the covidu-19 pandemic. This year, with a one-year delay, a number of films that were selected a year ago entered the competition.

The Czech Republic was not represented in the main competition this year, but the short animated film Red Shoes by Anna Podskalská, a student at the Department of Animated Film at FAMU, was screened in the Cinéfondation section. Vojtěch Jasný’s restored film When a Cat Comes, which won a special jury prize in Cannes in 1963, was screened in the Cannes Classics section.
