The film “January” by Viestura Kairis withdraws from the fight for the Oscar

The feature film of the Latvian director Viesturs Kairis “January” will not continue the fight for the Oscar “Oscar” in the category “Best foreign film”.

The extended list of Oscar nominees was released on the award organizers’ website on Wednesday, but Kairis’ film ‘Janvāris’ is not in the list.

As reported, the National Cinema Center (NKC) supported the marketing activities of the feature film with 20,000 euros, claiming it for an Oscar nomination. ‘Janvāri’ was decided to be nominated for ‘Oscar’ by the expert commission set up by NKC.

Countries had to submit their national applications for the prize by 3 October, an extended list of nominees was announced on 21 December and the final list of nominations on 24 January. The “Oscar” awards ceremony will take place on March 12, 2023.

The film “January” tells about the events of January 1991 in Riga. Kinolente had its world premiere in June of this year at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in the United States, where it won the jury prize for best foreign film.
