The film industry has gone through another eventful year. Super Mario: The Movie broke box office records, the Barbenheimers became an inseparable pair that took cinemas around the world, and Irish actor Barry Keoghan made some questionable bath decisions in Saltburn for an avalanche of comments from confused viewers in front of the screen.
In the past few years, however, Hollywood has also suffered a lot – not only because of the strikes, but also because of the failures of many Disney and Marvel films, which did not bring the expected successes and failed to cover their budgets.
Meanwhile, the 2024 Oscar nominations show how quickly industry attitudes can change.
This time last year, Margot Robbie had just finished filming Babylon, which despite Damien Chazelle’s direction, star-studded acting and Justin Hurwitz’s soundtrack, didn’t win a single Oscar. This year, however, she faces the Oscars as the face of Barbie, the biggest film of 2023, which grossed $1.4 billion and is nominated in as many as eight categories.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the Oscar nominations in all major categories on January 23. The award ceremony will take place on March 10.

The Despicable Me star could become the eighth actress to win two Oscars by the age of 35, after already winning one for the musical La La Land in 2017. If successful, the young actress will follow in the footsteps of Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Louis Rayner, Olivia de Havilland and Hilary Swank.
No male actor has won more than one Oscar by the age of 35.
Stone is also the second woman to be nominated for both acting and producing in the same film, following Frances McDormand for 2020’s Nomad Land.
Stone’s win for best actress is far from certain, with the category seen as contested between her and Killers of the Color Moon star Lily Gladstone.
