Malaga will be again from this Thursday epicenter of Spanish cinema and, for the second consecutive year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Film Festival will be held again in a format “adapted to the circumstances”, prioritizing the cinematographic exhibition over the social event, together with “rigorous protocols” of sanitary protection, which contributed to the success of the previous edition, held in August.
Thus, the face-to-face for the Malaga Film Festival is “essential” But for the second consecutive year, and due to the coronavirus pandemic, it will once again be a “prudent” appointment, which will respect the protocols established to stop the pandemic. The 24th edition will last until the 13th.
Once again, the objective of this edition is to return to being a “friendly, as always, but safe” festival, with the elimination of activities that involve crowding. of people without the possibility of respecting measures of social distance. The traditional red carpet will once again become a ‘photocall’ for the media, without an audience, in the gardens of the Miramar hotel.
The Official Section maintains the model that combines the commercial with the author. Thus, ‘El cover’, debut behind the cameras of actor Secun de la Rosa, will inaugurate the Festival, which will offer in its Official Section 23 feature films, 15 Spanish -four of them out of competition- and eight Latin Americans.
With the anticipation that the 2022 edition, its silver anniversary, will be held again on the usual dates of March, this edition of the 23 Malaga Festival begins, whose opening gala will be presented by Silvia Abril and Toni Acosta. At the closing he will take the reins for a significant part of it, Santiago Segura.
OFFICIAL SECTION
The Official Section of the contest will include 23 films, 19 in competition. The contest ‘El Cover’ by Secun de la Rosa will open and other debut operas will be scheduled: ‘Chavalas’, by Carol Rodríguez Colás; ‘Dead man does not know how to live’, by the Malaga filmmaker Ezekiel Montes; ‘Ama’, by Julia de Paz; ‘With whom you travel’, by Hugo Martín Cuervo; ‘La casa del caracol’, by Macarena Astorga; ‘Brave flash’, by Ainhoa Rodríguez; and ‘The consequences’, by Claudia Pinto.
The Spanish participation in competition will be completed by the works of veteran filmmakers: ‘El belly del mar’, by Agustí Villaronga; ‘El substitute’, by Óscar Aibar, and ‘Live is Life’, by Dani de la Torre.
Regarding the participation of Latin American films, the Festival has selected ‘The best families’, by Javier Fuentes León; ‘Amalgama’, by Carlos Cuarón; ’15 hours’, by the Spanish Judith Colell; ‘How the queens die’, by Lucas Turturro; ‘Karnawal’, by Juan Pablo Félix; ‘Mulher ocean’, by Djin Sganzerla; ‘Light years’, by Joaquín Mauad, and ‘The city of beasts’, by Henry Rincón.
The Official Section of the Festival will be completed with four other Spanish comedies out of competition: ‘Lamentable stories’, by Javier Fesser; ‘Operation Camarón’, by Carlos Therón; ‘Sevillanas de Brooklyn’, by Vicente Villanueva, and ‘García y García’, by Ana Murugarren, the film chosen to close the film competition.
For its part, the Málaga Premiere section will host the premiere of four series, which are ‘Maricón perdidos’; ‘Ana Tramel. The game’; ‘Paraíso’ and ‘Lucia en la cobweb’.
The Zonazine, Documentaries and Short Films section, the gastronomic section under the title ‘Málaga Cocina’, exhibitions and other parallel activities complement other activities of the Festival, which also highlights the importance of the industry area.
TRIBUTES AND JURY
As for the tributes, the Málaga Diario Sur Award goes to the director Alejandro Amenábar; the Retrospective-Málaga Hoy Award, for the filmmaker Mariano Barroso; the Málaga Talent Award-La Opinion de Málaga, for Oliver Laxe and the Ricardo Franco-Academia de Cine award, dedicated to the trades of the cinema, for the editor Julia Juaniz.
They join the Biznaga Ciudad del Paraíso, for the essentials of Spanish cinema, which will be delivered to the actress Petra Martinez, and the Biznaga of honor for director Javier Fesser. The Golden Film at the 24th Malaga Festival will be ‘That happy couple’.
The jury of the Official Section in the competition, meanwhile, will be made up of Nora Navas, Carles Torras, Rafael Cobos, Valérie Delpierre, and Elena Sánchez.

In this edition, 2,321 audiovisuals have been received, of which 181 have been selected. The number of origin is maintained, which stands at 70. Vigar has also highlighted that of the 2,321 films registered, 715 have been directed by women, 30.8 percent of the total; While of those selected, the number rises to 65, 36 percent of the total. 77 have been produced by women, 42.5 percent of those selected.
Regarding the breakdown, 312 fiction feature films, 112 Spanish, 13 co-productions; in addition to the 187 Latinas. On the other hand, 913 animation and fiction short films have been registered, of which 53 have been selected, 34 of them official and 19 Malaga shorts. Likewise, a total of 748 documentaries, 45 selected.
