Salima Mazari is one of the female governors in Afghanistan chose to stay in the country when the Taliban took power. According to local reports quoted from The Times of India, Salima was arrested and detained by the Taliban.
The news of the arrest was also conveyed by Nadia Momand, a TV journalist in Afghanistan. He wrote on his Twitter on August 18 that Salima Mazari had been captured by the Taliban.
In his teasing, Momand called for his release. From the report, there is no information on where Salima Mazari is currently located or when the Taliban arrested her. Here are the facts about Salima Mazari.
1. Governor of Charkint . District
Salima Mazari is governor of the Charkint district in northern Afghanistan, which has a population of more than 30,000 people. Fighting the Taliban is a mission Salima Mazari has been carrying out since 2019.
The 40-year-old woman recruits local residents to protect the Charkint district from Taliban. Prior to the Taliban takeover, half of the districts ruled by Salima Mazari were already under their control.

2. Born in Iran
Salima Mazari was born in Iran in 1980. Her family had fled the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and Mazari returned to the country decades later.
Salima was then appointed governor in 2018, making her one of the few women in male-dominated Afghan politics. Salima can be said to be an Afghan force in the war against the Taliban.
“Sometimes I’m in the office in Charkint, and other times I have to pick up a gun and join the fight,” he told The Guardian.
