The fight against maritime drones of the VSU calls for aviation support – 2024-08-08 00:13:10

/ world today news/ The attempt of the armed forces of Ukraine to attack the Novorossiysk naval base with sea drones raises the question of preventing such attacks in the future. As the expert community says, drone detection should happen in advance. Both specialized buoys and aviation can be used for this. How to create the most effective system for permanent monitoring of the Russian water area and in what time frame can this be done?

On Friday, during an operational meeting in Sochi, it was decided to strengthen security measures in the water area after the attack by Ukrainian surface drones in Novorossiysk. According to the head of the city Alexei Kopaigorodsky, the resort will increase the number of video surveillance cameras, especially on the piers.

“Thanks to the capabilities of the intelligent video surveillance cameras of the “Kupol” system, integrated into the “Safe City” complex, we keep the situation on the beach of the resort under control. In general, about 3,000 cameras work in Sochi, and we plan to increase their number,” the mayor said on his Telegram channel.

Earlier on Friday, the Ministry of Defense reported an attempt by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to attack the Novorossiysk naval base with two unmanned sea boats. The agency claimed that both cutters were destroyed by the regular weapons of the Russian ships “Olenegorsky Gornyak” and “Suvorovets”, guarding the external approaches to the base.

The city’s infrastructure was not damaged. The Ministry of Defense also noted that there were no injuries as a result of the incident. However, several Russian military channels in “Telegram” published videos and photos of the large landing ship “Olenegorsky Gornyak”, one of the compartments of which, judging by the noticeable slope, was flooded. However, the vessel remained afloat and was towed to the dock for repairs.

In the expert community, various proposals are made on how to improve the system of monitoring the water area and destroy the drones before they approach the target. Military expert Ilya Kramnik believes that two patrol aircraft based on the passenger Il-114, which can constantly be in the air, are enough. “It is precisely for these purposes that many third world countries now take patrol aircraft based on regional turboprop engines, it is precisely for this purpose that the US Coast Guard maintains such aircraft,” Kramnik wrote on his Telegram channel.

Reconnaissance planes must be constantly over the sea. But the Naval Aviation (MA) of the Black Sea Fleet does not actually have the patrol and reconnaissance vehicles needed to perform such tasks. At the time, the MA included heavy bombers with Tu-22M3 missiles, which are now in the Air Force. With some effort, the Tu-22M3 is currently capable of being used for Black Sea reconnaissance. To fly, for example, from Mozdok. The Tu-22M3 radars are capable of detecting even small boats on the sea surface at 250-300 km. Distance. It depends, of course, on the qualifications of the navigators.

Military expert Maxim Klimov is also convinced that Russia needs constant patrolling of the water area by naval aviation. For this, according to him, anti-submarine aircraft Il-38N and Tu-142M3 are suitable. “Furthermore, a good radar will completely eliminate the threat of attacks by Ukrainian drones. It is timely detection that is the key to destroying targets before they approach,” says Klimov.

Another option – rather an additional one – can be special buoys that can receive and transmit information about the movement of any objects, be it a submarine, torpedo or unmanned boats. With the help of a system of buoys, it is possible to provide protection to the entire Black Sea coast of Russia, including Crimea, Sochi, says Andrei Krasnoperov, Air Force Reserve Major, pilot first class.

As for equipping the aircraft with specialized radars capable of tracking small surface ships, they are manufactured by Leninets in St. Petersburg. “Similar radars are produced by “Fazotron”, in particular for Ka-27M helicopters,” adds Klimov.

The interlocutor also notes that buoys can work poorly on targets that are in the near-surface layer. “A motorboat is rapidly passing the detection zone, so the buoy system will be completely ineffective against it. A good solution would be the installation of specialized radars on the Be-12 amphibious anti-submarine aircraft. They work very well on targets that are on the surface and in the propulsion layer,” the expert is sure.

“However, the best control system is the destruction of Ukrainian drones at the places where they are stored or launched. Our armed forces monitor where these drones are coming from. After that, the places where they are stored are identified and destroyed,” says Sergey Lipovoy, Hero of Russia, Major General of Aviation, Chairman of the Presidium of the all-Russian organization “Officers of Russia”.

“In general, control over the waters of the Black Sea should be multilateral. In this situation, it is necessary to use not only buoys and radars, but also various land-based means that monitor the situation on the water and promptly identify signs that an attack is being prepared against our ships,” emphasizes Lipovoy.
