The fifth generation Ford Mondeo has officially debuted in China

After several unofficial appearances, the fifth generation Ford Mondeo has made its official debut in China. Launched at the Shanghai Design Center, the sedan will only be available in the local market.

There is no word yet that it will be marketed in Europe. What is known for sure is that in Europe, the fourth generation should go out of production in March.

The new Ford Mondeo – designed, built and sold in China

The new Mondeo is the first model designed according to the new design philosophy “Progressive Energy in Strength”. Aesthetic details are taken from Evos and Equator.

The fifth iteration is aesthetically similar to the Evos crossover. At the front we notice the octagonal radiator grille and the narrow LED headlights. They are connected by a light strip mounted on the edge of the hood.

The car has new daytime running lights and a letter A-shaped graphic for the air intake at the bottom of the bumper. The exterior is complemented by 19-inch wheels.

The door handles are hidden, with a “pop-out” design in the style of Tesla. The slightly sloping roof line gives the sedan a coupe look. The taillights are similar to the ones on the back Mustang Mach-E.

The bumper integrates the air diffuser which adds a sporty note to the car. It is framed by the two chrome exhausts. The trunk lid does not seem to be attached to the rear window, being clearly the sedan version.

The fifth generation Ford Mondeo was developed on the C2 platform on which the new Lincoln Zephyr for Chinese customers “sits”. Ford did not provide details on the engines.

If we were to look for the “245” emblem on the back, then there would be one under the hood EcoBoost 4-cylinder turbo engine of 2.0 liters. The unit develops a maximum power of 245 hp, which is most likely transmitted to the front wheels by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The new Mondeo will be built by the Chinese in Changan, and deliveries will begin in the second quarter of 2022.
