Next week, on April 9, the 25th Riga International Short Film Festival 2ANNAS will be opened, offering viewers to watch exciting competition programs online, where it will be possible to see both acclaimed works and new and experimental films. Along with the competition programs, since 2013 the festival has also created thematic non-competition programs, which are like research on the chosen topic, in which cinema is a scientific discipline. This year, the focus of the 2ANNAS festival is EARTH (within the 2020-2022 cycle SPACE, EARTH and HUMAN), and five original focus film programs will be submitted to the audience for evaluation and reflection.

In recent decades, our way of life has changed beyond recognition, and the rapid development of technology has affected both planet Earth and human lifestyles and health. The aim of the focus programs is to stimulate discussions on the theme of the festival, as well as to give new curators and artists the opportunity to introduce the public to innovative aspects of the focus theme.

The focus program “Anthropocene Age” (April 10, 20:00), created by the British journalist and film critic Jack Brindelli, will look at the world, revealing the impact of human activities on the Earth’s ecosystem. The artist Linda Bolshakova will take a look at the society dominated by eco-sexuality and eco-feminism with her selection of films “Eco-Sexuals” (10.04 at 23.00; 18+). Director Astra Zoldner’s focus program “Apocalypse” (April 13 at 9.30 pm) will make you think about the possibility that we are already living in the mood of the end of the world. In turn, the relationship between man and nature will be studied by film director and viewer Julius Nuhum Kulibali in the selection of Latvian short films “Naturally” (14.04. At 18.00).

Laima Graždanoviča, the director of the festival program, has created a special retrospective focus program “2ANNAS25: Movement through the Ages” (09.04. Festival 2ANNAS on April 9, at 20.00 will open the screening of the film “Delicate Bodies: F. Persia Smith’s Hidden World” (2016) and the performance and concert of the artist Sabine Moore or The Waterflower.

The 2ANNAS festival will take place online this year, and the films will be available for free on the festival’s website. The number of seats will be limited, so starting from April 1, the festival’s online visitors are invited to reserve a seat by registering for the screenings on the festival’s website.

The focus theme of the 2021 festival, EARTH, has been introduced since January by a series of lectures and talks, which look at current issues related to our planet through the prism of cinema. During the festival, Industry Day events will take place, during which representatives of the film industry will discuss the possibilities of the film industry to be an environmentally friendly industry. Film screenings and other special events of the European Film Academy are also expected.

Riga International Short Film Festival 2ANNAS, organized by the Virtual Studio “Urga”, is the leading short film festival in Latvia and one of the most important events of its kind in the Baltics, which has been promoting the short film genre for 25 years.
