The festival in Český Krumlov offers an opening ceremony on the lake and an opera premiere

Classical Music Takes Center Stage at Czech Festival

Český Krumlov, Czech Republic – Prepare for a symphony of sounds as the Český Krumlov International Music Festival returns this summer, promising an unforgettable journey through the world of classical music. Running from July 11th to August 2nd, 2025, this year’s festival will captivate audiences with a diverse program of performances spread across 17 unique locations throughout the enchanting town and its surrounding areas.

The Czech Republic’s historic castles will come alive with the melodies of renowned international artists. Music lovers will be treated to the virtuosity of Spanish guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas and Israeli violinist Maxim Vengerov, showcasing their mastery over their respective instruments. Local talent shines through with the Nevážná klasika project, featuring acclaimed actors Jan Budař and Václav Kopta.

Gabriela Rachidi, festival director, is excited about this year’s innovative programming. “We are trying to connect with those who are not connected," Rachidi explained. "We have put the opening ceremony of Baroque Unexpected on a lake in the park of the castle. We want to get the dancers directly on the water. Even the walk to the lake is an experience. It will be lined with thousands of candles, visitors will meet baroque characters on the way – actors from the runOperun group."

One of the most anticipated events is the performance of Handel’s opera Alessandro Severo at the Krumlov Castle’s Baroque theater. As Jana Semerádová, artistic director of the Collegium Marianum ensemble performing the piece, notes, "It has never been performed in the Czech Republic." The Baroque theater itself is a remarkable venue, considered the best preserved of its kind worldwide.

Beyond the traditional, the festival embraces the unexpected. Get ready for a captivating fusion of Baroque and modern sounds as works by Johann Sebastian Bach intertwine with compositions by the contemporary French composer Pierre Boulez.

“We are so audacious that we include the work of one author into the work of another,” Rachidi asserted.

Adding to the eclectic mix will be Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Take 6 and the acclaimed French string quartet, Quatuor Ébéne.

This internationally celebrated festival, which boasted an impressive attendance of 16,000 last year, has been a beacon of musical excellence since 1992, welcoming over 13,000 artists from 40 countries.

With its enchanting setting, diverse program, and commitment to innovation, the Český Krumlov International Music Festival promises an unforgettable experience for music lovers from around the globe.
