That underweight in women can be a cause of intuitive infertility (the organism, which knows nothing of voluntary diets, thinks: where there is no nourishment for one, let alone for two. And the menstrual cycle stops). Less intuitive is that being overweight also makes finding a child difficult. And an unbalanced diet as well. Nutrition plays a fundamental role for those who want to become a mother and in even more complex ways than what is supposed – she explains Edgardo Somigliana, head of the Medically Assisted Procreation Unit of the Ca ‘Granda Foundation Ospedale Maggiore in Milan – but not the only element that counts. We deal with reproductive “function”, which is something complex and depends on many factors: it is not only the weight or the diet that you follow that counts, but also the environment: we think about the damage that pollution and smoke. Correcting these factors may also be important in patients who have clear indications for medically assisted reproductive techniques because they can increase the success rates of these techniques.

Can we focus on the weight factor?
Let’s start with underweight: if you go beyond a certain threshold, which is extremely individual, an ancestral system is triggered which, at least in our society of abundance, is no longer of any use, but which alarms the body by suspending the menstrual cycle so as not to risking the life of the woman and thus giving her the opportunity to wait for a pregnancy more opportune times in which there is no “famine”. But, beware, in those who are underweight, the recovery of just one kilogram may be enough, perhaps going from 43 to 44 kilos, to see the cycle start again because the body turns off the “alarm”.

What happens in the case of obesity?
For complex reasons obesity, but also an unbalanced diet, are associated with inflammation and this too triggers the alarm in the organism; but even here the loss of a few kilos, passing from 120 to 115, is enough for the body to understand that it is returning to normal: the metabolism is back active and this happens more quickly if physical activity is combined with the diet.
