The Fertiberia Group incorporates a new nitrification inhibitor to advance the sustainability of its fertilizers

The Fertiberia Group continues to take steps to advance the sustainability of its products and become a European leader for the fertilization of the future. The company will use the nitrification inhibitor SDCD exclusively in Spain and Portugal for the development and production of its nitrogen fertilizers, which increases their efficiency, thus reducing their impact on the environment and guaranteeing the best soil conservation.

“The SDCD protects nitrogen and prolongs its activity, remaining active in the soil for longer,” says Javier González-Paloma, director of Agronomic Innovation at Fertiberia. Unlike other solutions on the market, after its application “the SDCD does not kill nitrosomonas (nitrifying bacteria in the soil), but rather interrupts their reproductive cycle for a time. Once the inhibitor is degraded, the soil repopulates with microorganisms, restoring the initial microbial balance ”. The stability and effectiveness of the SDCD on nitrogen and NPK fertilizers from Grupo Fertiberia has been verified by the Polytechnic University of Madrid and tested at the Center for Agro-environmental Technologies of Fertiberia at the University of Seville.

The company develops, produces and markets high added value fertilizers, with ranges such as Fertiberia TECH and the Plus Edition line. For the president of Grupo Fertiberia, Javier Goñi, “the commitment to this new nitrification inhibitor allows the company to align itself with the European strategy From Farm to Table, which provides for an ambitious increase in efficiency in the use of fertilizers in the period 2020/2030, which requires innovative products that allow European farmers to harmonize their essential work in food production with the preservation of the environment and the fight against climate change ”.

Control of leaching (washing into the soil) and nitrogen volatilization is essential to limit nitrate concentration in groundwater. “After studying the effectiveness of different nitrification inhibitors and checking their compatibility with the entire Group portfolio, we opted for SDCD, in a process that has lasted almost three years until we have been completely sure of its greater suitability compared to other solutions. of the market, ”says Goñi. Due to its great effectiveness “it can be used in doses up to twenty times lower than other inhibitors, so its impact on the soil is minimal”.

At this time, more than 40% of Fertiberia’s sales come from its portfolio of special products, in which the company has poured its experience and capacity for innovation to adapt them to large European crops and provide superior added value for the farmer and environment. The company’s goal is to bring this percentage to 70% in the coming years. With the application of the SDCD, progress is made towards this objective and allows the group to reinforce its leadership in the Iberian Peninsula and continue to grow in the foreign market, since in countries such as Denmark, Holland, Belgium and France, where Fertiberia develops an intense activity commercial, the demand for this type of fertilizer is growing at double digits.
