Few people know that the once bosom friends Andrei Tarkovsky and Andrei Konchalovsky were separated by a femme fatale. The two directors competed not only in cinema, but also on the love front.
These men were impressive and attractive to women. One day it turned out that the directors began to pursue one beauty. Konchalovsky admitted in an interview that he learned about this fact only years later from the autobiographical book of Valentina Malyavina. While caring for her, he had no idea that Tarkovsky was doing the same.
“Initially, the split between us occurred due to the fact that we were rivals in relationships with women, and here I did better than Andrey. The first crack appeared in Venice, but I learned about it much later – from Valentina Malyavina’s book: she stood between us. Andrei was in love with her, and I brazenly fought her off,” – said Konchalovsky.
However, this did not affect the joint creative work of the two masters. Afterwards they worked together on “Andrei Rublev”, discussed “Solaris”, but after a while their creative paths nevertheless diverged.
