Macaya Márquez commented on TV again at 89 years old
The clash at the Cilindro de Avellaneda between Racing and Red Bull Bragantino, for the second date of Group H of the Copa Sudamericana, offered a special flavor, but not on the playing field, where the action takes place, but at the height of the cabins. In the broadcast of the DSports signal, Enrique Macaya Márquez once again commented on a game on TV at the age of 89. The last time he had analyzed a match on the screen had been in 2018, on the occasion of the World Cup final in Russia that France beat Croatia.
Consequently, the legendary journalist, who covered 17 World Cups – from Sweden 58 onwards -, a feat that only he can boast and that ended up being a reason for tribute by FIFA, was also recognized at the home of The Academy . Accompanied by the rapporteur Gustavo Kuffner, he received the leadership of the local club, headed by the vice president Alfredo Chiodini, the general secretary Christian Devia and Barbie Blanco, in his work space, to enjoy their moment and be highlighted with a plaque.
“For us it is a pride and a pleasure to be able to recognize your career, which is so successful. This is the present that Racing gives you,” Chiodini prefaced, before the narrator read what he said. “For his outstanding professional career, exemplary performance, and his status as a reference for generations of journalists,” read the plaque in question, with the entity’s coat of arms.
“The last distinction was obtained in the World Cup, by FIFA, and Racing is noted, as it has always been noted. We were just remembering the games that were recorded in my life. And I forgot to mention one, very important one, at the Centenario stadium. Chango’s goal (Cárdenas). “I was on the field,” Macaya opened the treasure of his memories and alluded to the striker’s goal against Celtic of Scotland, which established the Avellaneda team as champions of the Intercontinental Cup in 1967.
“I thank them very much, they have been very kind, for me the feeling is the ball, it is football. For me this is very special, and the recognition fills me with pride,” she concluded, always in his classic formal tone, but with her voice filled with emotion.
“You are always welcome Macaya, we are happy to have you and that you are here with us,” concluded Barbie Blanco, daughter of Víctor, president of the club and also secretary of the institution.
