Bremen’s fleet of electric buses is set to continue to grow: As one of eight transport companies nationwide, the Bremen Tramway AG (BSAG) received a funding approval from Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) this Thursday – for the purchase of 50 battery-powered articulated buses. They would supplement the existing fleet of 20 electric buses, which, according to BSAG, will be in use in Bremen by the end of 2022. The Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport is providing the Bremen transport company with a total of 22 million euros.
Bremen’s Mobility Senator Maike Schaefer (Greens), who is also Chairwoman of the BSAG Supervisory Board, is delighted: “The funds from Berlin will help us to electrify the BSAG bus fleet in the long term and thus make an important contribution to climate protection and future-oriented public transport.” According to Schaefer, the turnaround in traffic with the aim of climate-friendly public transport cannot be achieved without electromobility.
A third then drives with electricity
Thorsten Harder, Technical Director of the transport company, shares this assessment. The funding will enable the next step towards locally emission-free local public transport in the Hanseatic city. “With a total of 70 electric buses, almost a third of the existing bus fleet will be operated with electricity in addition to our approximately 120 trams,” said Harder.
The 22 million euros for Bremen are part of a support package that the Federal Transport Minister handed over to the transport company on Thursday. The BMDV is investing a total of around 600 million euros in the procurement of climate-friendly buses. Around 1,700 buses are to be procured from the transport companies with the “Guideline for the Promotion of Alternative Drives for Buses in Passenger Transport” launched in 2021 – around 1,400 of them battery, 150 fuel cell, 50 trolley and 100 gas buses.
