The federal government is strengthening Canada’s defense capacity and creating well-paying jobs for Canadians

October 31, 2024 – Gatineau, Quebec – Public Services and Procurement Canada

The federal government is committed to ensuring that members of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) have the equipment they need to carry out their missions and assert Canada’s sovereignty.

Today, the Honorable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Lieutenant of Quebec, announced on behalf of the Honorable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defense, that the federal government has awarded a contract worth up to $1.85 billion (taxes included) to Lockheed Martin Canada (LMC) for the renewal of in-service support (ISS) relating to the integration of the combat system (ISC) of frigates of the Halifax class.

The renewal of this contract will ensure the continuity of ISC services until the Halifax-class frigates reach the end of their useful life, which will coincide with the gradual arrival of the new fleet of destroyers from the Rivers and Rivers class. This contract is estimated to contribute $76 million to Canada’s gross domestic product annually and will support up to 680 well-paying jobs per year in the Canadian economy.

The Halifax-class patrol frigates form the backbone of Canada’s maritime operational capability. The investments announced today will monitor Canadian waters and airspace, conduct large-scale search and rescue activities, provide emergency assistance and support peace and security operations in the world with the aim of asserting Canadian sovereignty.
